DWU men lose to USF, need at-large bid for national tourney

The Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball team lost to the University of Sioux Falls in a Great Plains Athletic Conference semifinal game Saturday 74-68. The game could possibly be its last one of the 2010-11 season.

Without winning the GPAC regular-season and now being knocked out of the postseason tournament, do the Tigers deserve to make the national tournament? Wednesday, they’ll need an at-large bid, which is a selection by a committee that feels the Tigers are one of the top teams that didn’t automatically qualify.  If the selection committee doesn’t pick DWU for the national tournament, its season will finish 23-8.

DWU is ranked No. 17 in nation. Do the Tigers get in?

Northwestern game recap

Here’s the look Chase Walder gave the crowd last night after hitting what was eventually the game-winning 3-point shot.

Here’s some extra quotes that didn’t make today’s story.

Chase Walder:

“Tenth-ranked team in the nation, senior night, Northwestern,” Walder said. “Those three words … I don’t think anything else needs to be said other than that.”

Northwestern coach Kris Korver:

When asked if Wesleyan is a threat in the postseason …

“They’re a good basketball team. They really played well tonight and they’ve got a couple of seniors that really lead them well. They’re a good basketball team.”

When asked if his team brought everything to the game, considering NW already clinched the regualar-season GPAC title:

“You know what? We’re going to play hard every night. The bottom line is these are 18- to 22-year-old young men. That’s the bottom line. There’s emotion and we’re all in this journey together.”

On whether he played his team as much as it would on a meaningful game:

“We played our guys … German went for 20 tonight and that’s the difference in the game. They had a kid step up. You can say would would have happened if Swann was in, but (German) wouldn’t have gone for 20 then.”
